Costa grew up in a very musical family in the city of Passo Fundo in southern Brazil. After learning the basics of his father, Yamandu Costa continued to refine his game with Argentine guitar master Lúcio Yanel.

The rumors about Costa’s talent spread rapidly, and at the age of 17 he appeared at his first concert in São Paulo.
